The simple gas-cost formula
Divide miles driven by your vehicle’s miles per gallon, then multiply the gallons by the current price per gallon.
Example: a 24-mile shift segment
For an illustrative 24-mile segment in a vehicle averaging 24 MPG with gas at $3.40 per gallon: 24 ÷ 24 × $3.40 = $3.40 in estimated gas.
Real fuel use changes with traffic, idling, weather, vehicle condition, and driving style. That is why No Tipper labels the number as an estimate.
Keep the inputs useful
Use a recent MPG figure rather than the best number printed for the vehicle. Update the gas price when you refill, then compare estimates across trips using the same method.
The estimate does not include maintenance, insurance, depreciation, tolls, or other driving costs. Keep those decisions separate from the gas calculation.

Does the estimate include idling?
The estimate is based on miles, MPG, and gas price, so unusual idling or traffic can make actual fuel use differ.
Is estimated gas cost the same as total vehicle cost?
